Background of the Study

Rural-urban migration has become a defining feature of socio-economic change in many parts of Nigeria, including Wukari LGA in Taraba State. This migration, driven by factors such as economic opportunity, education, and healthcare, has significant implications for local political dynamics. As rural populations move to urban centers, their political preferences, allegiances, and priorities evolve, impacting local elections, governance, and policy-making. This study seeks to assess the effects of rural-urban migration on the political dynamics of Wukari LGA, exploring how migration alters political engagement, representation, and the overall political landscape (Ibrahim & Mohammed, 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While rural-urban migration has been well-documented in terms of its socio-economic effects, its impact on political dynamics in Wukari LGA remains underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how the influx of migrants from rural areas into urban centers influences political behavior, party preferences, and local governance in Wukari. Specifically, the research will investigate how migration shapes voter turnout, political engagement, and electoral outcomes in the LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of rural-urban migration on political engagement in Wukari LGA.

  2. To assess how migration influences voter turnout and political preferences in Wukari LGA.

  3. To explore the role of rural-urban migration in shaping local political representation and governance in Wukari LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How does rural-urban migration influence political participation in Wukari LGA?

  2. What are the effects of migration on voter turnout and electoral outcomes in Wukari LGA?

  3. In what ways does rural-urban migration affect local political representation in Wukari LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Rural-urban migration significantly influences political participation in Wukari LGA.

  2. Migrants from rural areas have different political preferences than native urban residents in Wukari LGA.

  3. Rural-urban migration alters local political representation and governance in Wukari LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be critical for understanding the role of migration in shaping political outcomes in Wukari LGA. It will offer valuable insights for political parties, electoral bodies, and policy makers seeking to understand how migration patterns influence voter behavior and political representation at the local level (Sulaimon & Abdullahi, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the political impact of rural-urban migration in Wukari LGA during the 2023 elections. The limitations include difficulties in tracking migration trends and potential biases in self-reporting from migrants.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Political Dynamics: The interactions, influences, and shifts in political behavior, power, and representation within a given locality.
